How to write a matrimony profile that families love

Parents read a profile differently from the person it describes. Seven practical ways to write your About Me, choose photos and share family details that start the right conversations.

A matrimony profile is read by two audiences at once. The person you might marry is looking for a spark of who you are; their parents are looking for reassurance — about your family, your values and whether the two households will get along. The best profiles speak to both without sounding like a résumé.

Here are seven things that make the difference.

1. Start with who you are, not what you do

Your education and job already appear in your profile details. Use the About Me for what those fields cannot say: how you spend a Sunday, what your friends rely on you for, what you are looking forward to. Three or four honest sentences are better than a paragraph of adjectives.

“I teach maths at a school in Coimbatore and spend most weekends on my grandmother’s farm near Pollachi, or arguing about cricket with my brothers. I am looking for someone kind, curious and close to their family.”

Notice what that example does: a place, a routine, a relationship and one clear wish. It sounds like a person.

2. Write for the parents too

Mention your family in a line or two — who is at home, what your parents do, how close you are to grandparents or siblings. Families reading your profile want to picture the household their son or daughter would be joining.

3. Be specific about what you are looking for

“Good family, well settled” describes almost everyone. Say what actually matters: that your partner is happy to live in Chennai, that you would like to keep working after marriage, that you are vegetarian and would like a vegetarian home. Clear preferences save both families time — and help us rank the right people higher in your matches.

4. Choose photos that look like you today

Use a recent photo with your face clearly visible, in good daylight, without sunglasses or heavy filters. Add one full-length photo, and one in traditional wear if you like. Families should recognise you when you meet.

5. Share contact details only when you are ready

Phone numbers, emails and links are removed from About Me sections automatically, so your number never sits in public text. Families see contact details only through a contact view, and every view is logged so you know who looked. Read our safety tips for more.

6. Add your horoscope if your family uses one

If porutham matters to your family, add your nakshatra and rasi — and your full chart if you have it. Matches then see an indicative 10-porutham check straight away. New to it? Our guide to the 10 poruthams explains each one.

7. Keep it fresh

Update your profile when something changes — a new job, a move, new photos. Recently active profiles rank higher in search, and families notice when a profile is looked after.

Frequently asked questions

How long should my About Me be?

Four to eight sentences is plenty — long enough to show who you are, short enough to read comfortably on a phone.

Can parents write the profile?

Yes, and many do. It still helps to let the candidate write or approve the About Me: families can tell when the voice is genuinely theirs.
